Shane Van Boening: The Field Captain Behind USA’s Mosconi Cup Challenge

Johan Ruysink wants Shane Van Boening to be his leader in Orlando. For the returning USA coach, the American’s value lies in his willingness to adapt, his motivation and the example he brings to the team.

“He will definitely be my field captain.”

Johan Ruysink was clear when asked about Shane Van Boening’s place in his plans for the 2026 Mosconi Cup. The returning captain sees a player whose experience remains essential to USA, and whose enthusiasm for representing the team continues to impress him.

“I’m incredibly happy that he’s in the team,” Ruysink said. “I’m incredibly happy with his attitude and his motivation to play in the team.”

Van Boening returns to Orlando with another recent team success behind him. October’s Reyes Cup brought victory alongside players he has spent much of his Mosconi Cup career trying to beat. Now the challenge is to help America reclaim a trophy it last lifted in 2019.

Staying at the top means adapting

Ruysink’s assessment of Van Boening begins with how he has responded to changes in the game.

In their interview ahead of the Mosconi Cup, the USA captain pointed to tighter pockets and changes to the break as demands that have required established players to adjust. Van Boening, he said, has continued to find a way to compete at the highest level.

That is what makes his longevity significant. Experience gives him a reference point for the pressure of the occasion, but his ability to adapt keeps that experience relevant.

For Ruysink, the combination of playing strength, preparation and motivation makes Van Boening an important presence within the group. His description of him as the field captain underlines the responsibility he wants the American to carry when the competition begins.

A different team, a shared success

The Reyes Cup offered Ruysink a recent opportunity to watch Van Boening in a different team environment.

Representing Rest of the World at Makati Coliseum in the Philippines, Van Boening shared a side with familiar European rivals. Ruysink saw a group that respected one another, enjoyed being together and developed the connection required to win.

He regarded the competition as valuable preparation for the Mosconi Cup, for the American and European players involved alike.

Van Boening’s partnership with Fedor Gorst supplied an important point on the opening night. With Rest of the World trailing Asia 2–1, the Americans beat AJ Manas and Albert Januarta 5–1 to level the contest.

By the final day, Van Boening was partnering Francisco Sánchez Ruiz in the match that completed an 11–4 victory. Sánchez Ruiz potted the winning 9-ball, bringing the trophy to Rest of the World for the first time.

For Van Boening, the week provided another experience of contributing to a successful team. In Orlando, some of those teammates will become opponents again.

Knowing what the winning moment feels like

Van Boening has already played a defining role in an American Mosconi Cup breakthrough.

At Alexandra Palace in 2018, he faced Alexander Kazakis with USA one point from the title. His 5–3 victory completed an 11–9 team success, ending Europe’s eight-year winning run and returning the trophy to American hands for the first time since 2009.

A year later in Las Vegas, his final-day win over Kazakis moved USA onto the hill during a successful defence.

Ruysink led both campaigns. Their reunion brings together a captain and player who understand the work behind those celebrations, as well as the challenge of producing them again.

Europe have won all six editions since that 2019 American victory.

Leading into Orlando

Ruysink’s preparation will include a boot camp designed to bring the squad to its best level before the opening session. He wants the players to minimise mistakes and make their opportunities count.

Van Boening will be central to that effort. His captain has highlighted both the standard of his game and the attitude he brings to the group.

The task now is to turn those qualities into points, and help give the home crowd another American victory to celebrate.

The 2026 Mosconi Cup takes place from 27–30 November at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida.
